Most people who contact you about your pet want to help. Unfortunately, lost pet scams are common. These simple rules keep you safe.
If your pet is lost
- Never send money to anyone before you see your pet in person, even for “shipping” or a “vet bill”.
- Keep one detail private, like a scar or a special marking. Ask anyone who claims to have your pet to describe it.
- Ask for a current photo or video call showing the pet with something specific, like today’s newspaper.
- Meet in a busy public place and bring someone with you.
- Be careful with reward offers. Don’t post the amount, and only pay once your pet is safely back.
If you found a pet
- Check for a collar, tag or FindMyWag smart tag first.
- Take the pet to a vet clinic or shelter to scan for a microchip. Many will do this at no charge.
- Post the pet as Found on FindMyWag, but keep one unique detail private so the real owner can prove it.
- Ask the owner for photos or vet records before handing the pet over.
